As many of my readers know, I applied for a Habitat for Humanity home in August, went to the meeting and filled out all the paperwork involved with getting it underway.
Then you wait a long time in my case nearly 6 months to see if you are approved for a home, on December 22, 2011, I was told I was approved! Fantastic News!
Well as it has went, my landlord found out and has given me 60 days to VACATE my apartment of nearly 14 years, wanting me out by March 31st, 2012, I had been packing since I found out I was approved by Habitat. Well to pour salt in an open wound from the landlord, this morning I have learned that due to my landlords letter to me, Habitat For Humanity has cancelled their in home visit and now tells me that it will be YEARS, before I could have a home. This is one small point that they do not disclose in their meeting.
Instead they have people speak on their behalf telling how they only waited 9-12 months and their homes were completed. I will admit with the landlord I had felt like a stool was kicked out from under me, but now this with Habitat, just leaves me sick.
I hate to publish a plea for help, for others I would not mind, but I find it hard to do for myself to ask for help. However under the circumstances and the brief window I have of 60 days and the fact that blog reaches many people out there. I am going ahead and ask.
I am in serious need of a home to rent, at this point anything, I am a basket weaver and will be needing a spare room or dry basement to weave baskets in, however a spare room would work also. I live in Rockingham Country of Virginia now, I have tried in the past to relocate to Albemarle Country (Charlottesville) and surrounding area, however that has been unsuccessful, but have not given up hope. Augusta and Rockingham would be fine also.
If anyone knows of anything I would greatly appreciate hearing about it.

So sorry to hear about these difficulties Mitchell! It looks as if you are already getting some good advice from others comments and even one offer. As others have said, it all sounds as if something is not quite right and you need to dig in and find out what is really going on. I can’t comment on any of the legal aspects not being a lawyer but you should be able to get some good advice from that profession. I know that the laws in Canada regarding renting are quite strict in regard to the ability for a landlord to remove a tenant without very good cause. I will be following your blog on this subject and wish you all the best in resolving it soon. David

Other than not knowing what Habitat or your landlord can do legally I am so disturbed by the turn of events. Chin up and keep plugging away – sadly that is all I can offer.

I just heard the news on your blog. You know you always have a home here, with plenty of room to weave and live. Sandy

First please list the address of your landlord so that people can write to him and then give the address of the contact person for Habitat for humanity so that letters can be sent to him/her. After you contact a legal aid attorney, or yes, a social worker,
let us know what they say. Stay strong. We need to know how to help, where to help, and when to help.

I’m so sorry to hear this news. Unfortunately I’m in KY, but I’ll be sending good thoughts your way. Surely there’s some local legal aid that can put your landlord in the right place. Keep us posted on happenings.

I totally agree with the people above. Have can you be approved one day and not
approved the next. Sounds like H4H didn’t tell you the reason so you would at least know the reason. How can you defend yourself it they don’t give you the reason. I know you have always had a landlord from hell but this is just unreal. I just don’t understand H4H. It just seems to me that something very underhanded is happening.
I just can’t get over being approved for a month and them all of a sudden, you are NOT approved or ‘put on a back burner’. Someone please explain to me. I sure do wish I knew a lawyer that would do pro bono work for something like this. Keeping you in my thought and prayers, Carolyn

Personally I think its illegal to tell you to vacate an place as long as you have been paying rent etc. Have you talked to Habitat For Humanity or even a legal aid group?
Something doesn’t sound right. Alas I will pray everything works out and that you find safe housing.

Mitchell,
I don’t understand why your landlord’s eviction notice would/should affect the offer that Habitat of Humanity has already told you that you qualified and would be getting a house. Did your landlord and HH tell you WHY this was happening? What you desperately need at this point is an advocate to talk to HH in your behalf. Have you thought of contacting either a lawyer that would do this pro bono or have you tried contacting a social worker that is competent and used to dealing with authorities? Here I thought you were at last being saved from rack and ruin and becoming destitute, but no, that is not the case. I’ll put on my thinking cap and see if there’s any other avenues open to you. Bless you and hang on my friend!

MItchell, This is awful, and I find it very upsetting that you have paid rent to this person for fourteen years and they can’t be happy and supportive for you to get your own home! Why does this person even have a say in whether or not you qualify? It’s obvious they are a money hungry jerk! I am in New Mexico and do not have a home for you to move to, but ohhh how I wish I did!!!!
There are a lot of good people out there Mitchell, and I am sure someone will be able to help you relocate. I wish I was a wealth person, I would build you a cottage with a work space for your beautiful craft. God bless you brother, and keep us posted on your progress. Diane Taylor
